American Bulldog Training
American bulldog training is normally easier than trying to train other breeds of dogs, like beagles. American bulldogs are intelligent and normally pick up on what they are supposed to be doing fairly quickly. These are also great dogs to do agility training with as well. Here are some tips on training this great breed of dogs.
American bulldog training normally starts with housebreaking if you keep them inside. The best way to do this is with crate training. Since these dogs grow rapidly it is tempting to buy the biggest crate you can find, but make sure you buy one to fit their current size.
By using a crate that is too big, the dog can still urinate in the crate in one corner and then lay on the otherside. A crate should be small enough so that if the dog does urinate, it has to lay in its own urine, therefore learning its lesson.
Be sure your whole family is on board with training your dog. If you have to go away for a day on business you have to know that your dog is being handled consistently.
If someone does not take them out as planned to use the backyard it can set your whole housebreaking back to zero.
Commands
I believe that American Bulldogs are smarter than most other dogs I have trained. This means they learn commands very quickly.
Always start by teaching the sit command. By mastering this first, you can incorporate this and use it to teach and learn more advanced techniques.
If your bulldog jumps on people when greeting them, you can instead teach them to sit when meeting a new person and solving a potential behavior problem right there.
Summary
Remember that puppies make mistakes that is how they learn and how we learn as well. Make sure you have lots of patience and love.
Dogs love strong pack leaders so be one. This means clearly defining what they can and cannot do.
