Bulldog Breed Information
Bulldogs are a great breed of dog, in fact there are actually three breeds of dogs that could be called bulldog. These are the French, English, and American bulldog. Each of these dogs is unique unto themselves and each has their own unique history….
In terms of size the American bulldog is the largest followed by the English and French. The American bulldog can reach over 100 pounds. The English bulldog over 50 pounds and the French bulldog about 25 pounds.
The English bulldog is the original bulldog and the dog in which the American and French are derived. The original bulldog was a much more athletic dog than what we know today. The original dog was used in a sport where dogs would attack bulls, hence the name bulldog.
As you can imagine, in order to do this, it requires a much more athletic dog than what we know today. Today’s English bulldog cannot jump high enough or run fast enough to keep up with a bull.
The French bulldog was developed in France from smaller English bulldogs. These smaller dogs were great for chasing rats for farmers. These dogs became very popular with French prostitutes and even French royalty.
The American bulldog is the largest and most athletic of the three bulldog breeds. These dogs are large and can be used a guard dogs and also in athletic competitions. There were originally two different types of these dogs, the Johnson Type and the Scott Type.
But today these differences don’t really exist and today most of these dogs are mixtures of these two types.
The bulldog breed will continue to be a very popular dog because of its appearance and the fact that most people equate ruggedness and toughness with the bulldog.
