Common Bulldog Health Problems By Breed
The American, Enlish, and French Bulldogs suffer from some diseases at a higher rate then other dogs. In this post I break them down by breed. Reputable dog breeders should make every effort to pair dogs together that complement one another and in a way to prevent or eliminate breed specific diseases. Unfortunately, sometime the characteristics breeders want in Bulldogs lead to problems, and here they are:
As you probably know there are actually three breeds of dogs that can be called bulldogs. The English Bulldog is the original one, so we’ll cover that one first.
English Bulldog Health Problems
- Interdigital cysts
- Cherry eye
- Allergies
- Hip problems
- Dystocia
- Skin fold dermatitis
- Heat sensitivity
- Obesity
American Bulldog Health Problems
- Enlarged hearts
- Kidney problems
- thyroid problems
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Entropion
- Ectropion
- Bone cancer
French Bulldog Health Problems
- Von Willebrand’s disease
- Thyroid problems
- Brachycephalic syndrome
- Cleft palate
- Cherry eye
- Skin fold dermatitis
- Megaesophagus
- Heat sensitivity
- Back problems
- Dystocia
Do not let this list turn you off from adopting a bulldog. Bulldogs in general are very healthy. All breeds have some diseases that show up at a higher frequency and these are the ones most commonly seen in bulldogs.
In general the French Bulldog is actually considered the healthiest one of the three, but I believe the American bulldog is the healthiest.
I think this because of its size and due to recent crossing of the breeds.
