4 Bulldog Training Tips For The Rest Of Us
In this post I’ll go over some basic bulldog training tips that might not be so obvious to some people. Training your bulldog to do certain commands does not have to be as difficult as some people make it out to be. By following some basic advice you can have your bulldog learning quicker and with much less stress for both of you!
Dogs love to please the pack leader (which is you). But they need to know what you expect them to do and you have to communicate this clearly to them. Many first time bulldog owners do not know even the basics of bulldog training and they experience frustration when they don’t have to. Here are some dog training tips that will work for English, French, and American bulldogs.
1. Speak clearly and simply. Also use the same word for the command each time. Dogs get confused when you tell them to lie, and then tell them to lie down. Use the same word each time, one word commands work best. If you notice good dog trainers they speak in a clear commanding voice so there is not confusion about what is expected of them.
2. Only give one command at a time and enforce it. One reason why some dogs don’t learn as fast is because the dog trainer gives too many commands at once. Bulldogs at the beginning need simple and clear instructions. Also one of the most important tips is to be sure you enforce all commands that you give. If you don’t intend to enforce a command then don’t give it. A bulldog will learn quickly that they don’t have to listen to you if you don’t follow up with punishment or reward.
3. Train in a quiet area. Some people try to train their dog while sitting in front of the TV or with other puppies or children around. Not only does this greatly slow down how fast your dog learns, but also it leads to frustration on every one’s part.
4. Teach the sit command first. The sit command, once mastered, can be used as a starting point for almost all advanced training techniques. The sit command may not be the fanciest command, but it provides a good solid building block for advanced bulldog training techniques.
