English Bulldog Information
When people talk about bulldogs, in general they are referring to the classic English Bulldog. Although the American and French bulldogs, also go by the name bulldog, the English bulldog is the classic bulldog that we all know.Appearance
The bulldog originated in England of course and comes in a variety of colors. The coat is very smooth and short. The average size of an adult bulldog is about 50 pounds, smaller than the American bulldog, but larger than the french bulldog.
Health
Like almost all other brachycephalic breeds, bulldogs have breathing problems due to their short muzzle. This dogs can snore quite loudly as well.
Cysts between toes is a common health problem, that is easily treated in most cases. These inter-digital cysts do cause some problems for them when they walk.
Bulldogs, due to their large heads are often prone to dystocia, which is difficulty giving birth. Some bulldog puppies have to be delivered by cesarean section because of this.
In general English bulldog information tells us that this breed is generally healthy.
History
The facts about the origins of the bulldog is not clear. The term bulldog was first used around 1568. It is thought that the bulldog originated from a cross between the mastiff and the pug, but it is not clear.
The original bulldog was a much more athletic dog than other kind we have today. In the 1600’s these dogs were used for bull baiting or bear baiting where the bull or bear were tied to a stake and people would bet on which dog would first try to jump at the tied up animal first. Once these sports were outlawed, these dogs were now longer needed in their present shape.
This is when the bulldog was believed to be crossed with the pug resulting in the much less athletic bulldog we know today.
The Bulldog Club in England was formed in 1875 and is the oldest single breed specialty club in the world. They cam up with the first breed standard.
Mascot
The bulldog is a symbol of the England in general symbolizes it toughness. The bulldog is also a mascot of lots of schools. The bulldog is also the official mascot of the United State Marine Corps.
