Poor Poor English Bulldog Health
English Bulldog health problems, although rare, do happen. In this post I’ll go over commonly seen problems with this breed and what you need to watch out for. Like all animals a little preventative care can improve English Bulldog health.
Just by looking at the bulldog you can see its actual traits that make it distinctive also lead to many health problems, from the shape of its head, to its short legs, eat trait seems to lead to a problem.
One of the main health issues is breathing problems. English bulldogs seem to snore a lot and this is because of their short muzzle. This short muzzle can sometimes lead to shortness of breath, coughing, and in some cases cause them to stop any activity just to catch their breath.
Another issue is their short legs. They are prone to elbow and hip problems because of the conformation of their bones. We like our bulldogs to appear short and stout, but this causes problems for them.
If you breed English Bulldogs you may also be aware of the fact that they have trouble delivering puppies. Cesarean sections are often needed for delivery of these puppies due to the large size of their heads compared to the smaller size of their bodies.
The skin folds on their heads can also lead to problems. Since the skin in the skin fold can have trouble getting oxygen, bacteria and yeast love to grow their. This can lead to infections and inflammation or redness of the skin.
One modern problem of bulldogs and almost all dogs is obesity. Bulldogs are stocky to begin with anyways, and they seem to put on excessive weight quite easily. Careful monitoring by the owner to cut off treats and increase the amount of exercise is a must.
As you can see English Bulldog health can be poor if not monitored closely by the owner. Remember regular vet visits are a must.
