Types Of Bulldog Breeds

There are actually several different types of bulldog breeds out there.  When you say bulldog, do people assume you are talking about the American, English, or French bulldog. Here is an overview of the different types of bulldog breeds:

French Bulldog:  Although the names implies this dog originated in France, the American and British bulldogs seem to have played some development in its evolution.  This dog is also called the Frenchie.

It is beleived that lace workers from England took smaller bulldogs with them to France when they worked.  These little bulldogs caught on with the French people.  Originally bred as ratters, now these dogs are more lap dogs.  These dogs have characteristic “bat ears” which are wide at the base and rounded at the tip.  Their tails are short and not cropped.  Under the American Kennel Club standards this dog should not weigh more than 28 pounds.  There are a wide variety of coat colors available.

British bulldog:  Of course this bulldog originated in England.   Like other bulldog breeds, it comes in a variety of colors and has a smooth short hair coat.  Size of mature bulldogs is about 50 pounds which is twice the size of the French bulldog.

British bulldogs are the classic looking bulldog and have ears that seem to barely droop over as opposed to the “bat ears” of the French bulldog.

American Bulldog:  There are actually two types of American bulldogs; the Johnson type, and the Scott type, named after the breeders who developed them.

American bulldogs are the heaviest of the bulldog breeds weighing anywhere from 75 to 125 pounds.  Their ears are a little longer than the other bulldogs as well.

The Johnson type bulldog is the larger dog but with a shorter muzzle than the Scott type.

Normally these dogs stand between 20 to 28 inches tall at the shoulders.

American bulldogs are more of a working type of dog than the other breeds.  Used as guard dogs or for personal protections.  But these dogs are also good companion dogs as well.

So there you have a brief over view of the different bulldog breeds.  In summary the American bulldog is larger than the British bulldog which is larger than the French bulldog.
